son developers Walter and
David Cohen came pretty close when
designing DuCharme Place, a $45-mil-
lion luxury apartment complex near
Detroit’s Lafayette Park.
Gourmet appliances? Check. Fitness
center and pool? Check, check. Zen
garden? Check. On-site, secured park-
ing? Check and mate — the garage
also includes a car-washing station
and another to bathe dogs.
The list of features, which also
includes in-unit washer/dryers, com-
munal barbecue grills and a bocce ball
court, becomes even more impressive
when you consider that the Cohens
conceived of this project long before
Downtown Detroit’s remarkable
upswing.

and two-bedroom, two-bath units
that range from 640 to 1,100 square
feet. The first tenants moved in dur-
ing spring; and now about 100 units
are occupied, with another 40 or so
preleased. Monthly rent ranges from
$1,200 to $1,900.

said David Cohen, 35, of Bloomfield
Hills. “There weren’t even streetlights
in Detroit then. We were in the fore-
front.”
Now, he noted, “Detroit — the word
and the city — has become its own
brand, which has become really inter-
esting.”
