Stagecrafters kicks off its 62nd season with the musical comedy Sister Act. The show, which tells the
story of a nightclub singer who witnesses a murder and hides out in a convent (and is based on the
movie starring Whoopi Goldberg), features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slate, a book by
Cheri and Bill Steinkellner — and the original Broadway production was directed by Jerry Zaks, the
son of Holocaust survivors. Here, leading lady Terri Manning lights up the stage. $23-$26.50. Baldwin
Theatre, Royal Oak. (248) 541-6430; stagecrafters.org.
SEPT. 21-28: Murals In The Market
Watch as more than 50 local and international muralists paint
live throughout Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market during Murals
in the Market. The third-annual free public arts festival (newly
partnered with the William Davidson Foundation) will add to
the 100 public murals already strategically placed — thanks to
1xRUN and Inner State Gallery — through the Eastern Market
District, helping to expand its walkable footprint, giving visitors a
look into businesses and areas often unseen and underutilized.
Among the muralists: Heidi Barlow, Jeff Gress, Askew One
(shown) and more. While you’re there, check out the live music,
block parties, artist-curated events, talks, tours, an afterparty
and more. Muralsinthemarket.com.

— launches a season of award-winners and Broadway stars that includes
Jarrod Spector and Kelli Barrett and Birmingham-native Alexandra
Silber. Up first: Tony-nominee Carmen Cusack (Bright Star, written by
Steve Martin and Edie Brickell) is said to have a slight twangy style
“impeccable in both the bloom in her voice and the emotion she invests
in the lyrics,” the New York Times said. She gives two performances (7:30
p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) of An Evening with Carmen Cusack. $25-$125.
