The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit’s day camps
and youth programs will benefit from the 24th annual Dr. Larry D. Sills
Memorial JCC Golf Classic held at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club, West
Bloomfield. The record $100,000-plus in proceeds from the June 26 out-
ing will go toward camp and youth scholarships as well as for special
needs and other programming. The event, chaired by Miriam Bergman,
JCC executive committee member and camp committee chair, drew 158
participants for golf and card games.
Dinner honorees were the Eisenshtadt family, longtime JCC supporters,
notably via the JCC Maccabi Games. “The parents, Carol and Jerry, have
set an example of service, of generosity and of reaching out to the Jewish
world and the non-Jewish world — and the family has continued that tra-
dition through leadership in service and philanthropy,” said Mort Plotnick,
JCC executive director emeritus. Over the last 12 years, the golf classic
has raised more than $2 million in support of the community’s kids. The
day camp scholarship fund endows the event in memory of Dr. Sills, who
died in the 1987 Northwest Airlines crash near Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Addressing 191 dinner guests, JCC President Rick Zussman said:
“Larry Sills had a special place in his heart for camp and a passion for the
growth, independence and lifelong friendships it offers to children. Your
ongoing assistance keeps his passion alive.” •
