Congratulations jews d in the continued from page 83 Danny Raskin A Man Of Few Words Danny doesn’t like to talk about himself all that much, but we were able to get a few short answers: Birthday: Jan. 23, 1919 What do you like most about your job? Meeting wonderful people. Favorite food? No favorite. Favorite movie? Musicals You Have Always Been a Champion and Hall of Famer The Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation A quote that inspires you? None that I can think of. When you started at the JN, did you ever imagine in your wildest dreams you would be here 75 years later? Never. Any plans to retire? None. “Danny is a legend in the community. I remember as a young boy how Danny would be seen sitting in a restaurant with all the servers and the owner dot- ing over him. When Danny writes an article it’s like E.F. Hutton talking — everyone listens. Danny knows when he writes an article about a restau- rant, because people trust him, they pile in when he writes a good review. “I’ve said to Danny in the past, “How come you never write any- thing negative about a restaurant?” He said, “I’d rather write nothing at all than to badmouth a place where I know the owner works so hard. Whether I like it or not, they are working very hard, and I’m not going to try to hurt them.’ “Danny’s famous line to me was: ‘You just don’t know what it takes to turn that key in that door every morning’ — and he’s right. The pub- lic has no idea that for the owner of a restaurant, from the minute they turn that key in the morning, the bills start piling up from the lights, the heat, the air conditioning, the employees punching in, the food cost and the food waste. That definitely takes a lot of money to turn that key every day, and Danny always said he would never try to hurt any- one, only to help those who he felt deserved it. “Danny is a great man, a great friend, and the community is lucky that we have had him all these years. I hope Danny continues to write his column for the next 20 years because he’s an amazing man.” Mark Zarkin Owner Steven Lelli’s Inn on the Green Farmington Hills 248.592.9323 5FMFHSBQItøø #MPPNêFME)JMMT .J www.michiganjewishsports.org www.facebook.com/michiganjewishsports 84 July 18 • 2017 jn continued on page 86 F
