I t wouldn’t be the Detroit Jewish News each week without Danny Raskin in the paper. He’s been writing his column — and at one time two columns — since the Jewish News began publishing in 1942, and he’s never missed a week. That means this is Danny’s 75th — diamond — anniversary, too, making him (we believe) the oldest continuously working journalist in the Mitten State — and maybe even the country. He’s 98. To mark the momentous occasion, we asked several local restaurateurs to tell us what Danny Raskin has meant to them and the Detroit restaurant community. “I have known Danny Raskin since my first Andiamo opened in 1990. Over the past 27 years, Danny has done reviews on most of my Andiamo locations as well as Brownie’s on the Lake and Joe Muer Seafood. I have always considered Danny as a mentor in the restaurant industry. His reviews are always spot-on, helpful and never mean- spirited. I know that Danny has a good understanding of the chal- lenges in the restaurant business. Congratulations on your 75 years, and let’s raise our glasses for another 75!” Joe Vicari President & CEO Andiamo Restaurants & Joe Muer Seafood Metro Detroit locations “I’ve known Danny for many years. He’s an amazing man. For a man his age, his memory is unbelievable. He can go back and remember all the restaurants he went to years ago. He would sit with my wife, Lois, and me, and with his [now late] wife, Frieda. Danny likes to sit in booth No. 11 on the bar side. When he sits in that booth, everyone has to pass him to go into the dining room. It’s unbe- lievable all the people who know Danny Raskin. They’d see him and stop by to say ‘hi.’ “I was the business manager at a plumbers’ union. When Danny found that out when I opened Sposita’s in 1999, whenever something came up with his plumbing I would go there and we’d send someone out. He can talk about all sports. He is very knowledgeable, but why not — he’s been around for many years. Being friends with Danny means a lot to Lois and me. We think the world of him.” Joe Sposita Owner Sposita’s Ristorante West Bloomfield Wishing Danny Raskin & Th e Detroit Jewish News a Happy 75th Anniversary! 5600 Crooks Rd.
