Gary Rosenblatt, Arthur Horwitz and Chuck Buerger

TIMES OF ISRAEL

• March 27, 1942: Philip Slomovitz
published the Jewish News’ first edition.
• July 1951: Philip Slomovitz bought
the Jewish Chronicle.
• March 1984: Baltimore-based
Charles “Chuck” Buerger led a group that
purchased the Jewish News. Editor Gary
Rosenblatt of the Baltimore Jewish Times
also assumed the JN editorship.
Jewish News launched glossy STYLE
magazine for its subscribers.
• May 1986: Arthur Horwitz came from
Baltimore to run the JN.
• 1988: STYLE magazine distribution
expanded beyond JN subscribers and
throughout Southeast Oakland County.
• November 1996: Chuck Buerger
died.
• February 2000: Jewish Renaissance
Media was formed with Michael Steinhardt
as chairman and Arthur Horwitz as
president. Assets included the Detroit
Jewish News and the Atlanta Jewish
Times.
• January 2002: Fire destroys Jewish
News offices in Southfield, but the staff
was still able to publish that week’s paper.
• July 2011: Renaissance Media
and Jewish Renaissance Media become
Renaissance Media Solutions.
The independent Detroit Jewish News
Foundation received 501(c)(3) nonprofit
status.
• February 2012: First DJN Foundation
board meeting.
• November 2013: Content of digitized
JN available to the public.
• November 2014: William Davidson
Digital Archive of Jewish Detroit History,
encompassing the entire contents of
the Detroit Jewish News and the Detroit
Jewish Chronicle, named in recognition of
a $2 million gift from the William Davidson
Foundation.
• October 2015: Content of digitized
Detroit Jewish Chronicle became available.
• 2015: Detroit Jewish News formed as
a Limited Liability Company separate from
Renaissance Media Solutions.
