As is their yearly tradition on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, mem-
bers from Michigan Jewish War Veterans posts and the Ladies Auxiliary
gathered at Machpelah and Hebrew Memorial cemeteries to pay hom-
age to their fellow comrades.
Larry Berry, commander, JWV Department of Michigan, welcomed
those in attendance at both remembrance services. Rabbi Michael
Moskowitz of Temple Shir Shalom offered remarks and prayers at the
morning program at Machpelah; Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny of Temple Israel
officiated at Hebrew Memorial in the afternoon.
The ceremonies included processionals to special veterans sections
at each cemetery by the Jewish War Veterans Honor Guard, the reciting
of the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and Kaddish. A mov-
ing live rendition of “Taps” was performed by Paul Roache, a member of
Bugles Across America, an all-volunteer organization of 4,000 buglers
that offers this service at no charge for veterans in all 50 states. •
JWV Ladies Auxiliary: Shirlee Marshall, Ruth Vosko, Andi Weiss, Auxiliary President Myra Gross,
Ellen Hechler, Linda Zyla and Anita Volk.
More than 50 volunteers supported Kadima’s Annual Gardening Day on
June 4, visiting Kadima homes to plant bushes, flowers and mulch to
make a difference in the lives of people with mental health challenges.
Kadima was thrilled to partner for a second year with Federation’s
NextGEN and Macomb Community College Occupational Therapy
Department. Additional groups helped with the Kadima community gar-
den at the Henrietta and Herbert Charfoos Kadima Center in Southfield,
as well as planted new shrubs and flowers around the building.
“This event is meaningful for many reasons, including introducing com-
munity members to our services,” said Eric Adelman, executive director.
“Perhaps most importantly, our volunteers helped create homes filled
with beauty, hope and warmth. For our clients who struggle with mental
health challenges, this sparks optimism and hope.”
The event was supported by the Gardening Day Committee: Chad
Techner, Robin Tobin-Murav, Barbara Eisenberg and Janet Schenk.
