The Michigan Fine Arts Competition has been
hosted by the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
since 1982 when the DIA turned it over to the
BBAC. Featuring the works of 92 artists from
more than 600 entries — including Deborah
Hecht and Jeff Cancelosi (whose Planned
Obsolescence is pictured) — and juried by artist
and professor Noel W. Anderson (past jurors
have included Romare Beardon, Larry Rivers
and Nancy Mitchnick), this year’s exhibit opens
with a reception and awards presentation 6-8
p.m. Friday, June 23, and runs through Aug. 25.

StoryCorps, a nonprofit celebrating the stories of everyday
Americans founded by radio producer Dave Isay, has
collected more than 65,000 interviews from Americans in a ll
50 states. For one month, the StoryCorps MobileBooth tour
will be stationed on the lawn of the DIA to record interviews
in Detroit — some will be aired on WDET, some on the
project’s weekly NPR broadcast, some turned into animated
shorts and all will be archived at the American Folklife Center
at the Library of Congress. An opening day introduction
