mong the 175 national finalists competing at
this year’s United States Chidon HaTanach-U.S.
National Bible Contest for Jewish Youth were
five Farber Hebrew Day School middle school students.
The only participants from Michigan — Yishai
Hyman, Jaden Jubas, Shira Schon, Daniella Weil and
Moshe Zinberg — met with Farber Judaic studies teach-
ers, headed by Rabbi Asher Nemes, throughout the
school year to prepare for the competition.
“Being part of Chidon HaTanach is a commitment to
learn during otherwise free times, such as lunch periods
and Sunday mornings, as each year the
contest covers several books in Tanach
(Hebrew Bible),” Nemes said. “It has a
tremendous impact on the students
involved as well as Farber at large.”
For the past two years, the Chidon
has been coordinated by Yeshivat
Akiva alum and former Chidon cham-
pion Dovi Nadel.
In order to participate as national
finalists, students are required to com-
plete an aptitude exam based upon an
annual syllabus.

“It provides those involved with
an opportunity to learn sections of Tanach, including
parts they may not cover in their normal studies, such
as the Book of Iyov,” said Nemes, who chaperoned the
Southfield-based Farber students at the May 14 event at
Manhattan Day School in New York.
“Aside from all the material learned, they see how
vast our Torah is. Other students see how committed
their peers are to Torah study and, as a result, they grow
in appreciating Torah and Torah study, a valuable part
of Farber’s mission statement.” •
