Funds For Polish Jewish Life

Ride for the Living was inspired
by Robert Desmond, a member
of the Krakow Jewish community
who rode his bicycle 1,250 miles
from London to Auschwitz, visit-
ing WWII sites of liberation along
his journey. Desmond established
the Ride for the Living to celebrate
Krakow as not only a place of loss,
but also as an expression of hope
for the future of Jewish life in
Poland.

The Metro Detroit Jewish commu-
nity will hold “Detroit Ride for the
Living,” a 55-kilometer (34-mile)
fundraising bike ride, at 8:30 a.m.
Sunday, June 25, in a harmonious
expression of support for the Jewish
Community Center of Krakow. The
ride will mirror the annual Ride
for the Living in Poland, started in
2014, where cyclists gather from
around the world to ride from
Auschwitz to Krakow (55 miles) to
commemorate Jewish history and
celebrate the miraculous rebirth of
Jewish life in Poland today.
The Detroit Ride will raise funds
to support the rebuilding of Jewish
life in Krakow. It will leave from
the Huntington Woods Recreation
Center and travel to the Detroit
River and back, including an
extended break in Corktown. The
ride is hosted by NEXTGen Detroit
and the Israel and Overseas depart-
ments of the Jewish Federation of
