here was a good reason to cel-
ebrate earlier this month at the
35th annual B’nai B’rith Great
Lakes Region Golf Classic.
In an era when most benefit golf
outings are struggling to maintain
their number of participants, the
Golf Classic experienced an increase
thanks to some gently persistent
recruiting.

David Lubin said the 90 golfers who
participated in the event June 5 at
Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield Township were the most
in the dozen or so years he’s been the
Golf Classic co-chairman along with
Michael Fishman.
“We had around 80 golfers the last
few years,” Lubin said. “I hope we keep
increasing. I’d love to see us have 100
golfers next year.”
The 32 hole sponsors this year also
were the most in the Lubin-Fishman
tenure as co-chairmen.
Lubin has been playing the Golf
Classic since the late 1990s. He said
there are important reasons for his
lengthy stint as co-chairman.
“When I get involved in an organi-
zation like I am with B’nai B’rith, I like
to dig in and make an impact,” he said.
“Plus, the Golf Classic supports great
work done in the community, and it’s
important to support that work.”
The Golf Classic benefits area B’nai
B’rith Youth Organization chapters,
Hillel chapters on college campuses,
the Great Lakes Region’s college
scholarship program and B’nai B’rith
International programs.
Two of the three 2017 winners of
Great Lakes Region scholarships were
introduced at the Golf Classic dinner
at Tam-O-Shanter.
Scholarship winners Danielle
Silverman and Rachel Pesick were
there. Jason Jubas had another com-
mitment and couldn’t make it.

Each received a $2,500 scholarship
based on academics, need and com-
munity involvement.
This was the fourth year the Great
Lakes Region awarded scholarships.
The 10-member scholarship com-
mittee is headed by co-chairmen Rick
Sherline, Sid Roth and Lubin. Roth is
the Great Lakes Region president.
June 5 started on the cool side but
ended up warm and sunny, making it
a perfect day for golf. Bonnie Levine,
program director for the Great Lakes
Region, deserves part of the credit for
Mother Nature’s cooperation.
“I’ve been working on the Golf
Classic for 30 years, and I never order
rain, so we don’t get any,” she said.
This was the fourth year the Golf
Classic was at Tam-O-Shanter.
“They’re very good to us at Tam.
We’ve developed a good partnership,”
Lubin said.
Lubin is president of MJS Packaging
in Livonia, the Golf Classic sponsor.

NO. 1 IN THE COUNTRY
Northwood University freshman out-
fielder David Vinsky was a hit in his
first season of college baseball.
The Farmington Hills resident and
Harrison High School graduate led
NCAA Division II in hits and doubles.
He had a school-record 109 hits and
27 doubles.
Vinsky is only the second freshman
to lead Division II in hits and the first
since Kerry Dineen of the University of
San Diego did it in 1971. He’s also only
the second freshman to lead Division
II in doubles and the first since Wayne
Politelli from Eckerd College in 1973.
There’s more. Before this season, no
player in Northwood baseball history
had ever led the country in a statisti-
cal category. Vinsky’s 109 hits are
the 18th most all time in Division II
baseball.
Vinsky’s .449 batting average this
season was the second-highest in
Division II.
As for awards, Vinsky was named
“Freshman of the Year” in the Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference, he was a First Team
Division II All-American and a
National Division II Player of the Year
nominee.
A 6-foot, 200-pounder, Vinsky bats
right and throws left. He played in 59
games this season with 243 at-bats
and had four home runs, 60 RBIs, 62
runs scored and two stolen bases. •
