MICHAEL
FREEDLAND, 72, of
Petoskey and Venice,
Fla., died May 19, 2017.
He was founder and
president of Monarch
Steel. His life was filled
with helping others. He
Freedland
cared passionately for
animals and never left
home without dog treats
in his pocket. His own
two Labradoodles were often the recipi-
ents of these treats as was any dog he met
along the way.
Mr. Freedland is survived by his
beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Sue; his
children, Barry and Diane Freedland,
Jennifer Freedland and Dan Massey,
Joshua and Allison Freedland, and Emily
(Freedland) and Stephen Stuchell; grand-
children, Hayden, Oliver, Sophie and Mae
Freedland, and Sage and Sienna Stuchell.
A graveside service was held at
Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey.

JOSEPH GARLOCK, 97,
of Southfield, died May
19, 2017.
He was a lifelong
Detroiter. He graduated
from Northern High
School and Wayne State
University School of
Garlock
Pharmacy. After serving
as a lieutenant j.g. in the
Navy during World War
II, he returned to Detroit
to start his family and career. He worked
as a pharmacist in Detroit until the mid-
1950s, when he bought a drug store in
Pontiac, Garlock Drugs, which he owned
for 25 years. He continued working as a

pharmacist until 2006 (age 87) and only
stopped then because Farmer Jack, where
he had worked for more than a decade,
went out of business. He loved his work
and would happily have continued it into
his 90s.
Only family and friends brought Joe
more pleasure than his work. He married
the love of his life, Phyllis Sandelman, in
September 1941, and he was in love with
her and completely devoted until the day
he died. He was a tireless cheerleader and
role model for his children and grand-
children, a caring and attentive friend,
a thoughtful and generous mentor. He
taught himself to use information tech-
nology so he could stay up-to-date with
advances in pharmacy as well as with
his grandchildren, and he was a tough
competitor at a variety of computer word
games.
Mr. Garlock was the devoted hus-
band for 75 years of Phyllis Sandelman
Garlock; cherished father of the Hon.
Nancy (William) Edmunds, the late Dr.
Judy (Robert) Cheek, and David (Barbara)
Garlock; proud grandfather of Ben and
Nathan (Jenna) Edmunds, Jon (Laura)
Cheek, Laura (Aaron) Llanso, Amy, Jackie
and Stephanie Garlock; adoring great-
grandfather of Darren and Andrew Cheek,
and June Edmunds. He is also survived by
many devoted cousins, nieces and neph-
ews; and by wonderful caregivers, Karen
Holloway, Jackie Harris-Cary, Yvette Harris
and Sholanda Dawkins.
Interment was at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be made to a
charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by
Ira Kaufman Chapel.

Kunin

SEYMOUR KUNIN, 89,
of West Bloomfield,
died May 21, 2017.
He is survived by
his daughters, Gloria
Kunin and Shelley
Kunin; sister, Dorothy
Wiand; grandchildren,
Melanie Ashley Lubin;

many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kunin was the beloved husband
of the late Beverly Kunin; loving father
of the late Marc Alan; dear brother
and brother-in-law of the late Lloyd
Wiand, the late Edith and the late
Harry Paul, the late Esther and the
late Irving Haffner, and the late Phyllis
Kunin.

FRANK LAZAR, 92, of
Livonia, died May 8,
2017.
He is survived by
his daughter and
son-in-law, Vera and
Eric Lev; grandchild,
Jeffrey (Colleen) Lev;
Lazar
great-grandchildren,
Benjamin and Margaret
Lev. He is also survived
by many other loving
family members and
friends.
Frank was the beloved
husband of the late
Susann Lazar, also a
Holocaust survivor.
Interment was held at the Beth El
Memorial Park Cemetery in Livonia.

SYLVIA MONAST, 90,
of West Bloomfield
died May 13, 2017.
Sylvia was a loving
wife, mother, mother-
in-law and grand-
mother. She was a

social worker and a great musician.
She is survived by her husband,
Sam Monast; son, Keith Monast;
and daughter-in-law, Carol Monast;
son, Larry Monast; grandchild, Ian
Monast,and his fiancee, Kelsey Almer;
grandchild, Danielle Monast.
Mrs. Monast was the mother of late
Brian Monast; sister of the late Helen
Rochkind.
