On Sunday, May 7, the annual Walk/Run for Israel was held under sunny
skies at Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield. New this year were food
trucks offering Israeli food, but that was in addition to the ever-popular free
salad and pizza from Jerusalem Pizza.
Aside from bouncies, face-painting and music, an addition this year was
an interview with JN publisher/executive editor Arthur Horwitz by Walk for
Israel director Andre Douville. Horwitz discussed JN founding editor Phil
Slomovitz, who started the Jewish News 75 years ago. In honor of the
75th anniversary, the JN and Star Trax offered participants opportunities to
take photos of themselves with scenes from Israel in the background. •

Congregation B’nai Moshe won the second-annual Kosher Rib Burn-Off
in a lip-smacking contest that capped off the Independence Day Carnival
at Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit on May 2.
The rib burn-off, held in conjunction with the carnival, brings Jewish
organizations together in a fun way to strengthen community on Yom
Ha’Atzmaut. This year’s participants included B’nai Moshe, Tamarack
Camps, Frankel Jewish Academy, Walk for Israel, Congregation Beth
Shalom and FLIK Independent School Dining, Hillel’s in-house caterer.
While the competitors put the finishing touches on the ribs, carnival goers
of all ages enjoyed games and inflatables, sponsored by Level One Bank,
as well as face painting, a dance party and sweet treats sponsored by
Mira and Leopoldo Eisenberg and a “Tel Aviv Cafe” sponsored by Alrig
USA, serving falafel, salad and hot dogs.
The event raised funds for tuition assistance at Hillel. •
