Opens May 26: The Wedding Plan, an
Israeli comedy/drama, stars Noa Koler,
35, as Michal, a 30-something, ultra-
Orthodox Jewish woman who is jilted
by her fiancé just 22 days before they
are scheduled to take their vows. But
instead of canceling the reception venue,
booked for the eighth day of Chanukah,
Michal trusts that fate in the form of the
Almighty will provide a willing replace-
ment and that the ceremony will go on.
The film was written and directed by
Rama Burshtein (Fill the Void). Reviews
have been excellent. Michal’s unexpected
toughness and, yes, feminism, animates
the film. She doesn’t wait for God to
drop a new groom in her lap, but actively
seeks one out. Still, she won’t settle for
any guy. She bluntly turns down “unac-
ceptable” men in a speed-dating mara-
thon and she even turns down a proposal
from a famous Israeli pop singer who
she meets near the Ukrainian grave of a
famous Hasidic rabbi. The film ends with
a happy and unexpected twist.
The original Netflix film War Machine
premieres on Friday, May 26. It is a satire
that is loosely based on the non-fiction
book The Operators by the late Michael
Hastings. In 2010, Hastings, a contribut-
ing editor for Rolling Stone, did an inter-
view for the magazine with Gen. Stanley
McChrystal, then the head of NATO
forces in Afghanistan, in which the gen-
eral heavily criticized President Obama.
He was subsequently forced to resign. In
2012, Hastings turned his year of travel-
ing with and interviewing McChrystal into
The Operators.
Brad Pitt stars as Gen. Glen McMahon,
who is based on McChrystal. Emory
Cohen, 27, plays Willy Dunne, an impor-
tant member of McMahon’s staff. Cohen
burst into prominence with his lovely per-
formance as an Italian guy who courts an
Irish girl in the acclaimed film Brooklyn
(2015). The cast of War includes Anthony
Michael Hall as Gen. Michael Flynn (yes,
that Michael Flynn).

You’d think the teen years of Big Bang
Theory star Mayim Bialik would be any
young person’s dream. At age 13, she
was in Beaches (1988), a major hit film.
When she was 16, she was the star of
Blossom, a hit sitcom. (She later earned
a Ph.D. in neuroscience with undergrad
minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies.)
But, in a recent Marie Claire article,
the star recounts, year-by-year, from
ages 4 to 17, her insecurities. Age 17: “I
don’t like the boys the other girls like. I
don’t want to act dumb so boys will like

me. I want to find someone who looks
and thinks like Elvis Costello. I want to
live anywhere other than this country; I
want to go where I’m not the only one
who doesn’t shave my legs and armpits.
I want to go where it’s not weird to like
sports cars, comic books and veganism.”
Her new book, Girling Up: How to Be
Strong, Smart and Spectacular is aimed
to be an encyclopedic guide for all girls,
those quirky and those not, on how to
cope with the challenges of growing up.
Bialik, 41, says: “[It teaches] girls about
themselves through learning about the
cultural experience, or a scientific experi-
ence, of being female and how it varies
across culture.”
On her book’s cover, Bialik wears a
cape similar to Supergirl’s, as she jumps
joyfully in the air. She says: “I’m writing a
book about girls feeling empowered and
feeling intelligent and embracing their
quirky sides. I don’t want to be presented
as the pretty girl wearing glasses on the
cover of this book. I actually suggested
that we do something comic-y and
superhero-y and empowering with me in
sneakers, the way I always am.” •
