n Sunday, Nov. 13, University of Michigan Hillel students gathered
with Holocaust Survivors for SHARE’s (Students for Holocaust
Awareness, Remembrance and Education) annual Survivor
Luncheon. This was a great opportunity for students to meet Holocaust sur-
vivors and their families, and for survivors to share their personal stories.
“My second time going to the SHARE luncheon was just as powerful, if
not more than the first,” said sophomore Rina Steinberg of Huntington, N.Y.
“Hearing the stories of survivors never ceases to be heart-wrenching, but
what is more powerful is hearing about the incredible lives these survivors
lived post-Shoah. I cherish each story I hear from a survivor, as it is my
responsibility to be passing these stories onto the next generation when the
survivors are no longer here to tell them.”
Sophomore Melissa Berlin of Farmington Hills said, “I am still struggling to
understand the burden our generation carries of gathering the few firsthand
accounts that remain of the Holocaust and transforming them into lessons
that will guide our decisions as future leaders.
“The unique experience of the annual SHARE Survivor Luncheon allows for
multidimensional dialogue between survivors and students, and opens the
door for conversation beyond the facts of the survivors’ stories,” she added.
“Survivors are a gift of living history, and the conversations that the SHARE
luncheon facilitates empowers students to enter the world stage armed with
wisdom, knowledge and loud voices.” @
