It takes place a year after the events in the third film, but the principal cast has been replaced. Newcomer Jason Ian Drucker, 11, stars as Greg Heffley, replacing Zachary Gordon, now 19. Alicia Silverstone, 40, plays Greg’s mom. Long Haul finds Greg and his brother convinc- ing their family to go on a road trip for their grandma’s 90th birthday — but they actually intend to go to a video convention. Drucker was born and grew up in Hollywood, Fla. His father is an anesthesiologist and his mother is a fitness instructor. They belong to a local synagogue. Opening last week was the documentary Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent. Tower is a world- famous chef who trained, in the early ’70s, under chef/owner Alice Waters at Chez Panisse, the California restaurant credited with creating “California Cuisine” — a cooking style that ultimately influenced all American cuisine. Tower was Waters’ right-hand man, but a dispute led him to start his own restaurant, Stars, in San Francisco and there he became a superstar and one of the first celebrity chefs. Many famous chefs, now better known than Tower, trained under him, including Mario Batali (whose wife is Jewish and attended U-M). The film explores a complex man who has led an adventurous life on several continents. Those interviewed include chef Jonathan Waxman, 69, who worked with Tower at Chez Panisse; Mario Batali; Ruth Reichl, 71, the former New York Times restaurant critic and edi- tor of the now-shuttered Gourmet magazine whose known Tower since the ’70s; and Anthony Bourdain, 60, who is the executive producer of this film. DELIVERY AVAILABLE 2140950 Iliza Shlesinger, 34, is a hip, feminist comedian in the Amy Schumer-mode. She’s not as funny as Schumer; still, her new six- episode talk show, Iliza and the Truth, is better than most stuff on a basic cable station. It began on May 2 on the Freeform Channel (formerly ABC Family) and new epi- sodes air Tuesdays at 10 p.m. (All Drucker Bourdain Schlesinger episodes are free on Freeform site and through Roku, etc.) In the pre- miere episode, Shlesinger did a few stand-up funnies before a small live studio audience and then did some amusing commentary behind a desk. Finally, she interviewed her friend Mayim Bialik, 42, about Bialik’s new book, Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular (more about that next week). Shlesinger grew up in Dallas, where she was active in the Reform community: bat mitzvah, a trip to Israel and a year in BBYO (the B’nai Brith youth leadership organization). The HBO original film Wizard of Lies, about Wall St. crook Bernard Madoff, now 79, premieres on Saturday, May 19. Robert DeNiro stars as Madoff, with Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife, Ruth, now 75. •
