n the search for community members ages 95 and
older, organizers of this year’s Bessie Spector Oldest
Jewish Americans Brunch were delighted to identify
a privileged group of 180 individuals. Remarkably, that
number includes 30 who are at least 100!
Themed “Honoring the Greatest Generation,” the 16th
annual event takes place at 11:15 a.m., Friday, May 26, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
“As we celebrate May being Oldest Americans Month,
we honor those in our community who have reached
the milestone of 95 and older,” said Barbra Giles, execu-
tive director of aging services at Jewish Senior Life (JSL).
“This honor helps us to fulfill the
commandment we are taught in
the Torah to honor our mothers

“Each year, we are amazed by the number of vibrant,
active and engaged older adults that are honored at this
event,” Giles said. “As the number of older Americans con-
tinues to grow, we are amazed at the increasing number of
older adults honored at our community event each year.” •
