jn
isgah-Zeiger ended its dry spell
last year in the B’nai B’rith bas-
ketball league.
After losing in the playoff champi-
onship game in its first four years in
the league including three straight
years to Downtown Fox, Pisgah-Zeiger
finally broke through with a title.
Pisgah-Zeiger is now the owner of
two straight league championships.
Player-coach Rick Sherline’s team
beat Downtown Fox 57-47 April 9 in
the league title game at the JCC in
West Bloomfield.
The champs got off to a great start
in the first half and built their lead
to more than 20 points with about
six minutes left in the game before
Downtown Fox made a late run.
Scott Kapeller led Pisgah-Zeiger
with a dozen points and Adam
Greenberg had 10 coming off the
bench.
Janard Long (9), Russ Young (8),
Milan Gappy (8), Bryant Gaston (7)
and Jay James (3) rounded out Zeiger’s
balanced scoring attack.
Point guard Mike Feld didn’t score,
but he ran the offense efficiently.
Sherline, who has played in the
league since it was founded in 1976,
sat out the game to focus on coaching.
His team took advantage of some
absences.
“Downtown Fox was missing their
best player [Chris Warfield] and only
had about six players,” Sherline said.
“All nine of our players were there, so
we had a full bench.”
Pisgah-Zeiger’s roster was nearly
the same as in 2016.
Greenberg returned to the team
after missing most of the 2015 season
because of an injury and not playing
in 2016.
Gappy was a new player.
But Dan Serlin didn’t play because
of a torn ACL suffered while playing
basketball last year (not in the league).
Serlin formed the Pisgah-Zeiger
team along with Sherline six years
ago and was the leading scorer in last
year’s league championship game. He
scored 22 points in a 95-41 win over
Great Lakes Region.
Despite his injury, Serlin didn’t stay
away from Pisgah-Zeiger games this
season. He attended about half of
Pisgah-Zeiger’s regular-season games
and the league championship game.
When Sherline was there, he helped
with the coaching. When Sherline
wasn’t there, Serlin was the coach.
Pisgah-Zeiger went 9-1 during the
regular season and earned the No. 1
seed in the single-elimination playoffs.
Downtown Fox (7-3), Brotherhood No.
3 (7-3) and Brotherhood No. 2 (5-5)
also made the playoffs.
Pisgah-Zeiger lost only to
Brotherhood No. 3 during the regular
season.
Downtown Fox defeated
Brotherhood No. 3 50-48 in the playoff
semifinals April 9 before facing Pisgah-
Zeiger for the league championship.
Pisgah-Zeiger won its semifinal game
on a forfeit because Brotherhood No. 2
didn’t have enough players.
Downtown Fox won six straight
league championships before falling
short the past two seasons.
The league expanded from five to
seven teams this year. There were two
new teams from Brotherhood.
“It was a competitive season,” said
Gary Klinger, athletic chairman for the
B’nai B’rith Great Lakes Region.
On a related note, Klinger said he’s
selling raffle tickets ($25) for a seven-
day cruise in connection with the
B’nai B’rith Golf Classic on June 5 at
Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield and tickets for an NFL
pick ’em game fundraiser ($15) for
the International B’nai B’rith Bowling
Association.

TEE IT UP
The weekly B’nai B’rith golf league is
under way at the Links of Novi.
There are 22 golfers, the most in
the league’s six-year history. Ten
two-man teams are competing. Two
teams have a sub.
Each team plays nine holes each
week, with individual and doubles
competition. The league will run for
17 weeks. •
