Michael Schudrich

Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich will speak at the
Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus
beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 21. The event is spon-
sored by Wayne State University’s College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences and the Guy Stern Endowment in Exile and
Holocaust Studies.
During the Nazi occupation of Poland, more than three
million Polish Jews became victims of the Holocaust. They
were systematically hunted, deported and murdered.
Relatively few were able to hide, join the resistance, flee
eastward or pose as non-Jews.
After World War II, returning Polish Jews found a very
hostile environment. Many left or refused to return. Of
those who remained in Poland, some openly returned to
their faith, while others continued to hide their Jewish iden-
tities until th e end of Communism in 1989. Over the past 28
years, thousands of Poles have discovered they have Jewish
roots.
Today, Polish Jews have the leadership of Rabbi
Schudrich, who has served as chief rabbi of Warsaw and
Lodz since 2000 and chief rabbi of Poland since 2004. Rabbi
Schudrich, who is American-born and educated, has been
instrumental in reviving the once-vibrant Polish Jewish life
and culture.
The Holocaust Memorial Center is located on 28123
Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills. Cost is $5 for
Holocaust Memorial Center Members and $10 for non-
members. Seating is limited. RSVP by May 17 to rsvp@
holocaustcenter.org or (248) 536-9605. •
