Rebbetzin
Meet & Greet
The Education Committee of the
Sisterhood of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek welcomes the community to a
talk by Rebbetzin Rebecca Starr about
how the lessons of her childhood in
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in combi-
nation with Jewish tradition can teach
us ways to live greener, healthier lives
in suburbia. Learn how to implement
these ideas into your own life. Starr
explains the ways in which she and
her family lived off their 80-acre farm
in the U.P. She will highlight how her
family lived an authentic Jewish life in
rural Michigan.
A “Meet, Greet and Nosh” begins
at 10:30 a.m. April 30, followed by
Starr’s presentation. Afterward, guests
are invited to participate in planting
and pickling, sponsored by Hazon, a
nonprofit organization that promotes
creating sustainable communities.
Rebecca Starr is married to Rabbi
Aaron Starr, and they have two chil-
dren, Caleb, 9, and Ayal, 6. The family
visits the U.P. as often as possible.
Starr teaches for the Florence
Melton Adult Mini-School. In the
summer, she works at Camp Ramah
in Canada as an educator. She is a
certified personal trainer, and writes
about her experiences growing up in
the Upper Peninsula on her blog at
yoopergirlinthecity.com.
RSVP by calling (248) 357-5544 or
email sisterhood@shaareyzedek.org.

From political and financial
scandals to rapid progress in bio-
medical science and technology,
the complex issues of modern
society are, at their core, issues of
ethical and moral concern. Now,
more than ever, we require a solid
understanding of how Jewish eth-
ics can inform our discussions
and decisions about the critical
questions of the day.
Hosted at Congregation Beth
Ahm, each session of The Ethical
Life includes a short video lec-
ture featuring JTS faculty mem-
bers and other expert scholars,
text study, and guided group
discussion led by Rabbi Steven
Rubenstein.
Topics include:
• The Ethical Dimensions of
Food Production
• Is Teshuvah Possible?
Rethinking Mass Incarceration
• The Ethics of Torture and Just
War
• Disabilities and Ethics of
Inclusion

learn on Monday nights (May 1,
8, 15, 22 and June 12 and 19) from
