S

he’s had one of the longest and most
interesting careers in journalism, but
what Lesley Stahl most wants to talk
about is being a grandma.
“It’s one of the most exciting things of all
time,” said the famed 60 Minutes correspon-
dent.
She’ll be talking about both her career
and family life at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek’s annual Lois Linden Nelson’s
Women’s World on Wednesday, May 3.
Stahl grew up in Swampscott, Mass. Her

parents were not observant, but her father,
Louis, founded and supported several
Jewish organizations in Swampscott. Her
grandparents, Polish-Jewish immigrants
Harry and Esther Stahl, lived nearby and
were more traditional.
A few years ago, Stahl joined a group of
people searching out their Jewish roots in
Poland and visited Vladava, the town her
grandparents left in 1913. She was astound-
ed to see the synagogue was still standing —
during World War II the Nazis had used it to
