F

or the 25th year, Yad Ezra and the Moies Chetim
Organization of Detroit joined forces in a campaign
to distribute Passover groceries to 1,300 low-income
Jewish families in the community. Every family received a
package containing items necessary to make a seder: chick-
en, matzah, soup mix, grape juice, gefilte fish, eggs, horse-
radish, walnuts, tea, fresh produce, a box of candy and other
items specifically for use on the holiday.
The distribution on April 2-3 was handled by a corps of 60
volunteers under the direction of Darlene Rothman, client/
volunteer manager, and David Jaffee, warehouse manager.
Clients who could not get to Yad
Ezra had their groceries delivered to
their homes. Client families in Ann
Arbor and Flint and individuals liv-
ing in JARC and Kadima homes also
received Passover groceries.
On the first day of the Passover
distribution, a new program of the
Giving Gardens was launched — the
Client Garden Program. With the
chance to see hundreds of clients
Volunteers Gary Wexler, Bernie Jonas and in one serving session, volunteers
Bert Stein help in the warehouse. Pamela Shriman and David Levy
were inspired to invite clients to
share their interest in learning how to garden at home by
giving out seeds and seedlings, and helping to create home
gardens. Each client received a small pot with a seed, sym-
bolizing the seeding of a new phase of Giving Gardens.
Yad Ezra opened its doors in 1990 in response to the grow-
ing number of impoverished Jewish families living in the
Detroit community. The Yad Ezra/Moies Chetim Passover
Appeal enables the food pantry to distribute almost 65,000
pounds of food toward this effort of feeding vulnerable
Jewish families.

My Life.
My Happiness.

My Home.

“I have lived at Regent Street of West Bloomfield for
two years. I chose this community because I had family
living here who just loved it. And I do too! I love going
to Bingo, exercising every day and participating in all the
activities. I am very artistic and the art programs keep
me inspired! The staff is like family. In fact, a former staff
member and I formed such a close friendship, we still
visit and go out for lunch.”
