lassic” is Marshall Watson’s hallmark.
The renowned New York City designer
— who has created best-selling furniture
collections for Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman —
has been featured in Architectural Digest, House
Beautiful, the New York Times — and now, of course,
the Jewish News.
Last month, Rizzoli published Watson’s first
book, The Art of Elegance: Classic Interiors ($75),
which features 14 of his favorite client homes

island. While each home is as unique as its owner
and history, Watson brings out their intrinsic
elegance.
In one featured home, called “Fifth Avenue
Classic” and situated directly across from the
Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Greek and Roman
galleries, the Jewish homeowners’ goal, with
Watson, was to “craft a connection between New
York’s great public temple of the arts and the pri-
vate domain in its shadows,” Watson writes. “I was
gratified to see that the couple’s very contemporary

art collection sat naturally and comfortably within
a classical setting.
“In fact,” he says, “an exquisitely executed classi-
cal envelope can accommodate a range of styles —
because the simplicity, restraint and purity of clas-
sical architecture exemplify what we prize about
modernity. Rather than being at odds with one
another, art, architecture and decor are all mutu-
ally enriching.”
