The Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin, a multimedia performance telling
the story of Jewish prisoners in Theresienstadt who performed Verdi’s Requiem
Mass, will premier in Michigan, accompanied by the DSO, on May 4. Events
leading up to the performance include: The Music and the Meaning of The
Defiant Requiem, an insider’s look at the performance (April 19 at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek); The “Model” Concentration Camp Theresienstadt with Dr. Amy
Simon, who discusses the camp’s role in Nazi propaganda and its effect on
the inhabitants (April 26 at CSZ); documentary film Defiant Requiem telling the
story of Rafael Schachter, Czech conductor and leader of the Mass performances (April 30 at the Berman
Center for Performing Arts); discussion with creator and conductor Murry Sidlin (May 1, CSZ); and The
Butterfly: An Art Exhibition, a collection of children’s depictions of butterflies, inspired by the 1942 poem
