Recognizing U.S.-Israel
Economic Partnership

U.S Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., a
member of the Senate Homeland
Security Committee, is co-spon-
soring bipartisan legislation to
recognize the economic accomplish-
ments of the U.S.-Israel economic
partnership and support expanded
dialogue between the U.S. and Israel
to encourage innovation in science
and technology across a variety of
industries.
“Maintaining a strong, construc-
tive relationship with Israel, our
strongest ally in the Middle East, is
crucial to the future of innovation
for both nations,” Peters said.
“I am proud to work with my
colleagues from both sides of the
aisle to advance both American
and Israeli economic interests and
explore innovative technologies that
will strengthen both our nations’

economic and national security.”
The resolution encourages
the president to expand on the
American-Israeli relationship by
exploring new agreements with
Israel related to innovation in
energy, water, agriculture, medicine,
nanotechnology and cybersecurity.
Michigan has a vibrant economic
relationship with Israel. Michigan
exported nearly $150 million of
goods to Israel in 2014, and main-
taining this strong partnership is
vital to Michigan’s economic suc-
cess.
Michigan’s advanced manufac-
turing industry works closely with
Israel’s technological sectors to
improve manufacturing practices
and develop new technologies in
areas like self-driving vehicles and
cybersecurity. •

Detroit-area businessman and real estate developer Mickey
Shapiro, a child of Holocaust survivors who began his col-
lege career at Ferris State University, has helped Ferris
acquire access to the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History
Archive.
Ferris becomes only the third institution in
Michigan to have access to a fully streaming video
collection of more than 54,000 primary source testi-
monies of survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust
and other crimes against humanity.
“My ability to provide the funding to Ferris, to
acquire a perpetual license for the USC Shoah
Foundation Visual History Archive, has special mean-
ing to me,” Shapiro said. “I was born in 1947 in a
displaced persons camp in Germany and was 2 years
old when my parents, Asa and Sara, both Holocaust
survivors, came to Detroit after World War II. They
Mickey Shapiro has been rebuilt their lives in the United States, and it is my
part of an effort to help parents that inspire my philanthropy.”

The Shoah Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg,

thropic generosity and humanitarian efforts, and his passion
for Ferris and education, in general. •
