Mrs. Shawn is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Leslie and Doree Shawn
of Hollywood, Fla.; daughters and sons-
in-law, Suzanne Shawn and Marshall
Solomon of Farmington Hills, Phyllis
and Bill Jarvis of West Bloomfield; sister,
Beverly Bennett of West Bloomfield; sis-
ter-in-law, Freda Shawn; grandchildren,
Brandon and Gabby Jarvis, Justin Jarvis,
Courtney and Ari Klein, Michael Shawn
and fiancee, Alexis Kanarek, Daniel and
Noella Solomon, Michael Solomon; great-
grandchildren; Morgan Jarvis, Zachary
Jarvis, Mason Klein, Taylor Klein; other
loving family members and friends; care-
givers, Christine Singleton and Cassie
Scales.
Mrs. Shawn was the beloved wife for

EDWARD SHERMAN,
97, of Southfield, died
March 5, 2017.
He was a beloved
husband, father, grand-
father and friend who
lived a life devoted to
family and a passion

for the arts: painting,
opera, symphony as
well as travel.
Mr. Sherman was
born in Detroit on Oct. 17, 1919, to
Latvian immigrant Abraham Sherman
and Lithuanian immigrant Ida Schneider.
They were part of the close-knit Hastings
Street Jewish neighborhood
He attended Cass Technical High
School’s arts program, and then Pratt
Institute in New York. World War II inter-
rupted his career as a comic book illus-
trator, drawing the “Ted Paris” series for
Harvey Comics in New York.
He was drafted into the Army Air
Corps and stationed in England, where
he supported B-26 bombing raids on
the German-occupied French coast.
Following World War II, he used the GI
Bill to fund his art and painting studies
in Paris, where he developed his Cubist
style in the studios of Metzinger, Gleizes,
Leger and Lhote; he later painted in
Florence.
Mr. Sherman returned to the States,
where he founded a silk screen print-
ing company and continued to paint.
He married his wife, Helen, in 1960 and
became a loving and supportive father
to her three daughters, Linda, Julie and
Cathy, and later, a devoted father to
daughter Amy.
He will always be remembered for his
gentle nature, beautiful smile and spar-
kling eyes, for all the many questions he
always asked, his love of politics and so
many funny stories.
Mr. Sherman is survived by his daugh-
ters and sons-in-law, Linda and Charles
Soberman, Julie Blair, Cathy and Kenneth
Shiovitz; grandchildren, Lisa Glazer,
Tracey Jackier and Scott Gilden, David
and Jennifer Soberman, Stephanie Blair
and Jason Gurzell, Michael and Jennifer
Blair, Dr. Stacey and Seth Cohen, Daniel
Shiovitz and Hannah Lidman; great-
grandchildren, Lilah Glazer, Hannah
Glazer, Kaiya Jackier, Asher Gilden,
Jonah Soberman, Drew Soberman, Ezra
Shiovitz and Elias Shiovitz.
He was the beloved husband of the
late Professor Helen Sylvia Sherman; the
devoted father of the late Amy Phyllis
Sherman; the loving brother of the late
Dr. Phillip Sherman; the dear father-in-
law of the late Sheldon Blair.
Interment was at Beth El Memorial
