He was born in Windsor, Ontario,
on Oct. 25, 1919. His birth name was
Isidore Katzman. He later changed his
name to avoid religious-based discrimi-
nation in employment.
Mr. Nelson graduated from
Assumption Street School (now F.W.
Begley School) in Windsor, then moved

with his family to Calgary, Alberta,
where he graduated from high school.
After returning to Windsor at the
start of World War II, he enlisted in
the Royal Canadian Air Force, where
he was a radio technician stationed in
the Queen Charlotte Islands, British
Columbia. After the war, he was
employed as a furniture salesman at
Tepperman’s in Windsor.
In 1948, he enlisted in the Israel
Defense Forces and was assigned to
the fledgling Israeli Air Force as an air
gunner and radio operator. He partici-
pated in several bombing missions over
Egyptian military positions in Gaza
and Khan Younis during Israel’s War of
Independence. Upon conclusion of that
war, he returned to Windsor, but found
employment opportunities limited. He
then emigrated to the United States,
eventually becoming a U.S. citizen.
He was employed for many years as a
furniture salesman for Kerns and later
for many years with J.L. Hudson Co. in
Downtown Detroit. After retirement
from Hudson’s, he continued to live
alone in Ferndale. He never married.
In 2016, he moved to Meer
Apartments, a part of Jewish Senior Life
in West Bloomfield.
