The exhibit was developed and is presented in North America by the Polish Mission of the Orchard Lake Schools in exclusive partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum of Poland (A-B Museum). The City of Wixom will open the exhibit with an almost- black-tie reception at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at the Wixom Community Center. The reception will open with author, historian and distinguished lecturer Teresa Wontor-Cichy of the A-B Museum, who will give her emotional interpreta- tion of the art and artists featured in this exhibit. Afterward, guests will mingle while enjoying music, wine and appetiz- ers provided by local sponsors. Guests will also be treated to a private group 45-minute viewing of the exhibit. The entry deadline is Friday, March 31. The theme of the first annual competition is “The Power of One,” emphasizing the impact that an individual can — and must — make in the world. Open to Oakland County students in grades 8-12, the competition invites them to create a written or artistic response to the following quotation of Anne Frank’s: “How wonderful it is that no one need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” The competition includes three art categories: drawing, painting and photography. Pieces must be two- dimensional and not exceed 18” x 24.” Each also must include a 150- to 200-word artist statement. It also includes three writing categories: poetry, essay or short story. These entries may not exceed three, single- spaced pages. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of the categories.
