On Feb. 11, members of the Farber Hebrew Day School-Yeshivat Akiva community
gathered at the Soul Center in West Bloomfield for the school’s second annual Scotch
& Wine Tasting & Auction. The event, hosted by Iain McCallum, Master of Malts at
Beam Suntory, featured a Japanese theme and showcased Japanese whiskeys, among
new flavors and old favorites. The evening also featured an array of kosher wines from
all over the world displayed by Le Vin Company. The Japanese theme was carried
throughout the evening from the Japanese decorative lanterns to the Baikingu dinner
prepared by Milk & Honey/Epic Kosher Catering. After words of Torah from Rabbi Noam
Stein, Farber principal, the evening culminated with a live prize auction featuring sports,
food, jewelry and photography prize packages. Proceeds from the auction and the
evening went directly to the school. •

Israeli born cross-cultural singer,
Ester Rada, mixes Ethio-Jazz, funk,
soul and R&B. Ester opened for Alicia
Keys at her Israeli concert to rave
reviews from critics. Her sound is
a deep reflection of the Israeli born
Ethiopian heritage. Growing up in a
highly religious Jewish family in more
than modest conditions in one of the
roughest neighborhoods of Israel,
gave Rada the drive to change her
way of life and fulfill her dream of
creating music.
