Hebrew Free Loan gives interest-
free loans to members of our
community for a variety of
personal and small business
needs. HFL loans are funded
entirely through community
donations which continually
recycle to others, generating
many times the original value
to help maintain the lives of
local Jews.

looking back

Esther Winer began working at
age 16 and continued until she retired.
“I worked for years in various jobs
throughout the Jewish community,”
Esther said. “Most of my career was
centered around agencies and Jewish
businesses. I had some savings when
I retired, and I thought I would be
comfortable. But things came up, and
suddenly what I’d saved was gone.
Now, here I am on a fixed income with
absolutely no ability to come up with
large sums in case of emergencies.
And there are emergencies in life, no
matter how careful you are.”
Esther knew about Hebrew Free
Loan through her work in the commu-
nity, but said she never thought she
would be someone who needed the
agency. “My mother used to say
‘When God closes a window, he
opens a door.’ This time, when God
closed my window, HFL opened my
door. They really helped me when I
needed it. I found them to be kind,
empathetic and helpful, the way I was
when I was working with others. I felt
they really cared about me and how I
was doing.”
Esther says she is also grateful HFL
worked with her on her repayment
terms. “The loan was interest-free,
and the payments are reasonable,
with consideration for my budget.
Because I thought I had a decent
amount of savings, I thought I would
be fine and wouldn’t need to be con-
cerned about handling whatever
unexpected expenses came my way.
But I’m glad I had Hebrew Free Loan
to turn to. I want the whole world to
know how wonderful HFL is, and how
lucky we are to have them. Call them,
they’ll be there for you.”
