Frank Talk

P

arenting is hard. As go the cliches, there is no manual;
each child is different; kids grow up faster these days,
etc.
But something becomes a cliche for a reason — usually,
because it is true.
In today’s world, few parents feel completely confident
about how they are guiding their children through either the
everyday struggles of growing up or the debilitating crises
that can occur with stunning regularity. Moreover, too few
parents admit — to themselves, their closest friends, family
members or school personnel — that they or their children
are struggling with mental health challenges.
To that end, Kadima and Adat Shalom
Synagogue will host “Breaking the Stigma: A Frank
Conversation About Our Children’s Mental Health.”
This March 15 evening program for parents will
include a discussion on mental health issues relat-
ing to children and teens, followed by a question-
and-answer session. This new program is supported
by a grant from Federation’s Stephen H. Schulman
Millennium Fund for Jewish Youth.
“The genesis of this program came from the
sheer number of conversations I was having with
Rabbi Aaron Bergman
parents about mental health challenges facing their
children,” said Rabbi Rachel Shere of Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills.
“Everyone was feeling so alone, and I wanted
to let all of these parents know there are so many
others in the same situation. If only we could get
together and hear one anothers’ stories, we would
know none of us was alone; imagine the energy and
support we could generate if we started talking to
each other.”
The panel discussion will be held from 5-6:15
p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Adat Shalom and will
feature Rabbis Aaron Bergman and Rachel Shere;
Rabbi Rachel Shere
Shari Murray, Kadima social worker; and Robin
Tobin-Murav and Dr. Ruth Lerman, parents who will
share their stories. The event is free and open to the
community.
“Our goal in partnering with Adat Shalom is to
create a space where people can comfortably ask
questions and share information about mental
health challenges that affect many families in the
community,” says Jean Nemenzik, Kadima clinical
director.
“The stigma surrounding mental health issues is
one of the greatest barriers families and individuals
Eric Adelman
have to overcome to begin the process of recovery,
and the main thing we want folks to know is that
recovery is both possible and probable. The sooner you get
help, the sooner recovery can begin.”
Eric Adelman, Kadima’s executive director, says, “Our
clergy have such deep connections with their congregants,
but few are well-trained in clinical matters. By creating a
venue at the synagogue, hosted by the clergy in partnership
with a Kadima social worker, we bring together the best of
both worlds to create the most positive outcomes for our
community.”
He says Kadima and Adat Shalom hope this model will
be replicated at other Jewish and non-Jewish congregations
throughout the area and the country.
