raising objections, he noted that
Zingerman’s does not employ
foreign-born undocumented work-
ers — those facing the greatest risk
of deportation.
The Sussman brothers’ support
for Sanctuary Restaurants has to
do in part with their decision to
open Samesa, which captures the
flavors of the Middle Eastern res-
taurants they enjoyed growing up
in Southeast Michigan.
“For this reason, we owe a debt
to the Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian
and other immigrants to that
region,” Max Sussman said. “By
joining the SR movement, we are
making a statement that we do not
allow racism and bigotry in our
restaurant and that we value our
diverse community of customers
and staff.” •

A Day Without Immigrants

Many businesses along the commercial strip in Detroit’s Mexicantown closed
their doors on Feb. 16 in observance of “A Day Without Immigrants.”
Mike Fienman, the Jewish co-owner of his family’s E & L Supermercado
on Vernor, is among those who chose not to do business as usual. As back-
ground, his grandfather Edward and a business partner started in 1945
as E & L Meats in Downtown Detroit before moving to the southwest side.
Eventually, the population around their location became overwhelmingly
Latino.
“When a business is part of a community, it has to support the people in
that community,” Fienman said. “A lot of our employees and customers have
been jittery and scared with all the talk of deportations.”
Fienman said he wasn’t aware of the boycott day, which included a mass
rally, before an employee brought a flyer to work on the Monday before the
Thursday event. By Wednesday, noticing the momentum growing for the
special day, Fienman made his decision not to open. He noted that all of the
mom-and-pop businesses were shuttered on Vernor that Thursday, with only
national retailers, like CVS and Family Dollar, doing business.
Most people were supportive of the market’s closure, and Fienman said he
isn’t bothered by the few who complained about it on Facebook.
“This was not the ‘Day of Undocumented Immigrants,’ but an opportunity
we took to celebrate the hardworking immigrants who have made many con-
tributions to our nation,” he said.
“The event meant a lot to the neighborhood.” •
