The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit demonstrated the expanse of
its “community” by attracting 175 Jews in Florida with Detroit ties to a SAJE in the
Sun afternoon of mingling, noshing and learning in Delray Beach.
The Jan. 30 program featured a Detroit newspaper power couple, Brian Dickerson,
a columnist at the Detroit Free Press since 1998 and a senior editor on the editorial
board, and Laura Berman, a columnist at the Detroit News for almost 30 years before
she recently retired.
They spoke on the conundrum of “Irreconcilable Differences: An Intimate Look at
Public (and Private) Discord.” Citing provocative research from psychologists as well
as personal experiences as married, but sometimes dueling, newspaper columnists,
they examined the age-old struggle of liberals and conservatives battling in politics
and beyond.
Sydelle Sonkin dedicated the event at Seagate Country Club in memory of her late
husband, Sheldon. Andee Liberman was introduced as interim SAJE director.
The JCC’s Seminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment (SAJE) is presented in partnership
with Wayne State University’s Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies. Cis Maisel
Kellman endows SAJE, and Carol and Ronald Fogel and Sophie Pearlstein support it,
through the JCC’s Pillars of Light program. •
