NEW ON TV WITH
A DISHY ASIDE
Doubt, a CBS legal thriller, starts on
Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 9 p.m. As the
series begins, the lead character, attorney
Sadie Ellis (Katherine Heigl), has fallen
for her client, a doctor accused of mur-
der. Her effort to clear him is the arching
plot line of the show. Meanwhile, we
learn about her boutique law firm’s very
diverse staff, which includes a trans-
gender attorney and a law clerk who
was a former felon. Leading them all is
Isaiah Roth (Elliott Gould, 76), who
is described as “a revered legal lion
and lefty legend whose approval is the
[staff’s] holy grail.”
Doubt is Heigl’s first regular TV role
since leaving Grey’s Anatomy in 2010.
Her movie breakout role came in 2007
when she co-starred in Knocked Up,
a Judd Apatow comedy co-starring
Seth Rogen that became a surprise
hit. After it opened, however, Heigl
publicly trashed the film’s script as
demeaning to women. Apatow, now
49, and Rogen, now 34, the film’s
co-writers, were outraged over Heigl’s
remarks.
Heigl was not only seen as disloyal
— but she then proceeded to co-star
in other, much dumber film comedies in
which women were far more stereotyp-
ically depicted than in Knocked Up. She
has since apologized for her remarks.
Barbra Streisand, 74, who was
married to Elliott Gould from 1963-
71, could teach Heigl a lesson in tact.
When asked about Gould after he
became a star with the MASH movie
(1971; directed by the late Robert
Altman), she would never throw dirt,
replying: “Hey, he’s the father of my
child and I wish him well.” (Their son,
Jason Gould, now 50, is Streisand’s
only child. Elliott, a practicing Jew, has
two other children, now grown, from
his second marriage.)

‘TIS A MYSTERY
You might have heard that TMZ
and People have reported that Judy
Garland’s body is going to be trans-
ferred from the suburban New York
cemetery where it has been since her
death in1969 and re-buried in Los
Angeles, at the Hollywood Forever cem-
etery. People said the move was being
made because there wasn’t room in the
New York cemetery for Garland’s chil-
dren (Joey Luft, 61, Lorna Luft, 64, and
Liza Minnelli, 70, and Lorna’s children)
to be buried near Garland.
TMZ added that Garland is being
interred in the “Jewish section” of

Gould

Rogen

Garland

Hollywood Forever and they speculated
that had something to do with the fact
that her first husband, composer David
Rose, and her third husband, Sid Luft,
were Jewish.
Well, I checked: Rose is buried in
another L.A. Jewish cemetery and Sid
Luft was cremated and his ashes scat-
tered. Other possibilities: While I have
strong clues that Lorna doesn’t identify
as Jewish — her late husband, suc-
cessful rock musician and producer
Jake Hooker (born Jerry Mamberg)
was Jewish and the father of Lorna’s
two children, the only grandchildren of
Judy Garland. Hooker may be buried
in Hollywood Forever’s Jewish section
(Hooker and Lorna’s first grandchild
was born just before Hooker’s death).
Also, it’s possible that Lorna’s children
and/or Joey Luft identify as Jewish and
want to be buried near Judy in the
Jewish section. (Trust me, the whole
story won’t remain, dare I say, buried
forever). •
