Honorees: Jesse Arm, David Rabens, Pete Hoekstra, Eugene Greenstein and Ed Kohl. ZOA-MI’s Balfour Celebration The Zionist Organization of America, Michigan Region celebrat- ed its 82nd annual Balfour Dinner on Dec. 4 at Adat Shalom Synagogue with about 250 people attending. Dr. Eugene Greenstein and Dr. David Rabens were given Israel Lifetime Achievement Awards. Greenstein was ZOA-MI president for six years and continues to advo- cate for Israel every day. Rabens is an ardent Zionist and serves on the ZOA-MI board. Ed Kohl was honored with the Justice Louis Brandeis Award, ZOA- MI’s highest citation of merit. Kohl is a staunch supporter of Israel and a tireless community activist; he served as treasurer for ZOA-MI. Jesse Arm was presented with the Student Zionist of the Year Award for his actions defending Israel on the University of Michigan campus. A U-M student government rep- resentative, he was placed under investigation by a student ethics committee because he spoke up for Israel against SAFE (an anti-Israel organization on campus that sup- ports the delegitimization of Israel and BDS). Arm retained his seat. Keynote speaker, former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, was awarded the Defender of Freedom Award. • War Veterans Help On Holiday On Christmas Day, the Jewish War Veterans, led by Commander Larry Berry, and a dozen members and family helpers visited the Battle Creek Veterans Hospital to lunch with some of the veterans who spent their Christmas at the hospital. They ate with them and spoke to all who would listen and listened to their stories as well. After lunch, they participated in the annual bingo games members have played for the past 60 years. The Jewish War Veterans provided all the prizes and made sure the 200 or so men and women who partici- pated in bingo received prizes plus a pair of warm socks and bag of “good- ies,” said Commander Art Fishman, JWV Post 510. “It was a long day, starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending around 5 p.m., but what a great feeling it was for us all,” Fishman said. • Chef Steve and his highly talented line-up of cooks are taking these short six weeks to feature some of the classic offerings that have remained our guest’s favorites over the years.
