U-M Gift
Targets Theater
& Drama

University of Michigan Regent
Andrea Fischer Newman and her
husband, Frank Newman, made a
gift of $1 million to support three
critical areas within the Department
of Theatre & Drama at the U-M
School of Music, Theatre & Dance
(SMTD).
The gift provides holistic support
by funding scholarships, a facility
upgrade and the “senior theater
showcase” that introduces graduat-
ing actors to theater professionals
in New York City, Chicago and Los
Angeles.
“Frank and I were thrilled to
be able to make this gift to the
School of Music, Theatre & Dance,”
said Andrea Fisher Newman.

training of all performing artists.
“We’re also very excited about
supporting the theater showcase;
it is invaluable in exposing our
outstanding theater students to
entertainment industry profes-
sionals looking for new talent.
This career-enhancing program is a
great example of the Michigan dif-
ference in facilitating the transition
from undergraduate achievement to
professional success.” •
