When You Know
You’ve Met ‘The One’
I
t was June 1985, and I was at my daughter Amy Selik
Douville’s ninth-grade play at Hillel Day School. I was sit-
ting in the front row with my family. Behind us was the
family of my daughter’s very good friend. As we were intro-
duced, I thought, “Wow, Amy’s friend sure has a good-looking
uncle!”
There were two uncles. Neither one was with a wife, and I
was divorced. But the one I was interest-
ed in did have a wife at home. That was
the end of that.
Late one Saturday afternoon 19 months
later, on Jan. 24, 1987, my phone rang. It
was him! He asked me if I was available to
go to a movie that night. I put the phone
down and asked my daughter which
brother was Alan because I wanted him
to be the one with the salt and pepper
hair. She knew him and she said, “Mom,
that is him.”
I picked up the phone and said, “Wait,
aren’t you married?” He said he was sepa-
rated and had been for 11 months, so I
said, “Sure, I would love to go!”
The interesting part of this story actu-
ally started the week before our date. I was talking to a friend
about blind dates and said I would love for a man to walk into
my house and fall back against the wall and go, whoa. She said
that only happens in the movies.
Well, my doorbell rang and my daughter opened the door.
As I saw him step into the foyer, it happened! I had no control.
I literally fell back against the wall.
We went to the movies, then out for a bite to eat. He
brought me home, and we shook hands at my front door.
He didn’t even ask me out again that night. I walked into my
house, turned around and slid down the back of my front
door and thought, “I sure hope he calls me again.”
Thank God, he did. We were married in August 1989 and
we renewed our vows on our 25th wedding anniversary
almost three years ago.
