Obituaries

GERALD PENFIL, 89, of Oak Park, died
Dec. 20, 2016.
He is survived by his son and daughter-
in-law, Jay and Helene Penfil; daughters
and son-in-law, Tih Penfil, Shari and
David Klein; daughter-in-law, Helene
Penfil; grandchildren, Noach and Shira
Klein, Yonah and Leah Klein, Yosef and
Keren Klein, Aryeh Klein, Levi Klein,
Mara Penfil, Michael Penfil; 13 adoring
great-grandchildren; Lois Lowenstein;
and many other loving family members
and friends.
Mr. Penfil was the beloved husband for
60 years of the late Joan Penfil.
Contributions may be made to a char-
ity of one’s choice. Interment was held at
Hebrew Memorial Park. Arrangements by
Hebrew Memorial Chapel.

NORMA SCHACHTER, 94, of Lake
Worth, Fla., died Dec. 17, 2016.
A former resident of Jamaica Estates,
N.Y., she was a retired New York City
public school teacher, who taught at
Junior High School 217 in Queens. She
loved peanut butter and bacon sand-
wiches, sculpting and Japanese art. She
was an avid reader and especially skilled
at solving the New York Times crossword
puzzle, even on Saturdays. She kept cur-
rent on the news and was a keen political
observer.
Mrs. Schachter is survived by her
son-in-law, Arnold (Shelly) Podolsky of
Huntington Woods; grandchildren, Erin
(Jeremy) Walker and Gabriel (Kellie)
Podolsky; great-grandchildren, Liam
Podolsky, Isaac and Raphael Walker.
She was the wife of the late Frank
Schachter; mother of the late Lynn
Podolsky; sister of the late Mimi
Bergman; companion of the late Max
Lonner.
Contributions may be made to the
JARC Lynn Podolsky Culinary Arts Fund
or a charity of one’s choice.

ILENE “IS” GOSS SCHUSTER, 68, of
New York, N.Y., died Dec. 8, 2016.
Is was an accomplished and exception-
ally gifted artist. Her website, ISschuster.
com, highlights many of her works
and achievements. She graduated from
Oak Park High School and Wayne State
University. Is will be deeply missed by all
who knew her.
Mrs. Schutser is survived by her ador-
ing husband of 34 years, Mal Schuster;
children, Morgan Schuster, Sara (Steve)
Kraft and Carrie (Alan) Holtz; grand-
children, Josh, Jared and Ian Kraft, Alexa
and Adin Greenbaum; siblings, Peggy
(Danny) Palter, Jan (Larry) Greenberg,
David (Rita) Goss, Stuart Alter; many lov-
ing nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Ceremonies of love and acceptance
were conducted by immediate family in
New York City.
