Awaken the Beauty Within...
D
uring almost every hockey
practice or game, Josh Nodler,
15, knows he can pretty much
count on seeing his proud grandfather,
Alvin Nodler, seated somewhere in
the cold metal bleachers of the arena.
There’s also a high likelihood that a
number of scouts will be among the
spectators as well.
Partially because Josh is one of the
top young players in the area and par-
tially because he plays for Honeybaked,
a team that is ranked fifth in the nation
(part of the Honeybaked Hockey Club,
a AAA hockey organization), Nodler,
his teammates and opponents are being
closely watched.
In addition to the scouts, Nodler cap-
tured the attention of Michigan State

University Hockey Coach Tom Anastos
and his assistant coach, Kelly Miller. So
much so that over the summer, Nodler
made a verbal commitment to MSU
to don a hockey jersey and play for
the Spartans once he graduates from
Berkley High School. He says he will
head to East Lansing with a full scholar-
ship.
Despite being approached by a num-
ber of “desirable schools,” Nodler, an
Oak Park resident, chose MSU because
of the school’s “rich history of hockey,
good training facilities and excellent
coaching staff.
“I also like the fact that it’s close to
home, and my family and friends will
be able to watch me play,” said Nodler,
who can be sure his biggest supporters,
including mom, Dana, and bubbies,
Adele Nodler and Judye Kanfer, will be
there.
Bob Mancini, one of Nodler’s for-
mer coaches who now works for USA
Hockey, praised this 5-foot 11-inch cen-
ter for both his leadership and athletic
skills and believes he is among the top
5 percent of players in the nation for his
age group.
“Josh is a dynamic offensive player,”
Mancini said. “As a coach, you want the
puck in his hands. He is creative and
unselfish on the ice. He is a wonderful
teammate who leads by example.”
TO THE FUTURE
According to Jim Cotter, executive
director of admissions and recruitment
at MSU, high school athletes and college
coaches frequently make verbal agree-
ments — which often include some
form of scholarship — but such com-
