A Simple Love Story
I
n this picture are my late husband,
Dr. Sheldon (Shelly) Kapen, and
me on Oct. 15, 1959, as we descend
the steps to Ulam Maxim- Hall on
King George Street in Tel Aviv, the
beloved city of my birth,” writes
Rachel Kapen of West Bloomfield.
“Shelly was an American-born
young man who graduated from the
Upstate Medical School in Syracuse,
N.Y., and had an abiding love for Israel
and the Hebrew language. His wish and
plan was to do his internship in Israel;
however, before he started, the Jewish
Agency sent him to improve his Hebrew
at Ulpan Borochov in Givatayim, a resi-
dential Ulpan for professionals where I
was taking an intensive course for Ulpan
teachers.
“Shelly noticed me the first time as I
headed to the communal dining room,
and this was love at first sight, at least
on his part. He started courting me at
the Ulpan, and when I ended my course,
he left his class and followed me. We
were married soon after, and our first
home was in the doctors’ quarters of the
Ungar
hospital where our firstborn Gilead was
born on July 26, 1960. Our second son,
Alon, was born in Jerusalem. We left for
the U.S. in the spring of 1962 because
Shelly’s mother was ill.
“Shelly died on Thanksgiving
2012, only a year following his retire-
ment from the Detroit Veterans
Administration as the chief of the neu-
rological services. A pioneer in sleep
research, he also established the first
sleep lab in the VA system and directed
it for many years — the reason we came
to the Detroit area.
“Shelly and I were married for 53
fulfilling years raising our four sons.
Everyone who knew us said we comple-
mented each other and respected one
another, which I believe was the secret
to our good marriage.”
