JDAIM: Jewish Disability
Awareness & Inclusion Month

students claimed to be offended by
the screening of the movie American
Sniper on campus. Their feelings
were taken so seriously the screening
was initially cancelled. The movie is
a dramatization of the life of Navy
Seal sharpshooter Chris Kyle, who
earned several heroism medals in his
four tours of duty in Iraq.
Both Schlissel and the vice presi-
dent for student life issued state-
ments acknowledging that cancel-
ling the movie was a mistake. But
importantly, they also validated the
feelings of Muslim students, recog-
nizing that some Muslim students
felt uncomfortable, marginalized
and hurt by the movie’s content.
After SAFE’s actions on Rosh
Hashanah, Schlissel and a number
of regents did meet with a small
group of Jewish students. A nice ges-
ture, but hardly sufficient.
Schlissel has a moral duty to edu-
cate the campus community that
actions have consequences and that
having the right to do something
doesn’t mean you should do it if your
actions will hurt others.
More specifically, Schlissel has
a moral obligation to explain why
SAFE’s actions were hurtful to
Jewish students on their holy day.
This isn’t asking for special treat-
ment for Jewish students. It’s asking
for equal treatment. Schlissel must
give Jewish students’ feelings and
concerns the same consideration
and respect that is afforded to the
feelings and sensitivities of other
students.
The years of administrative
silence when Jewish students are
targeted has got to stop. Ed Kohl
and I raised this issue at the Dec.
8 Board of Regents meeting. We
hope the community will join us
in demanding equal treatment for
Jewish students and in calling on the
University of Michigan leadership
to finally find its voice and speak up
for its Jewish students.
