t's December and Chanukah is just
around the corner. This year, it begins
the night of Dec. 24. So, as the holi-
day nears, there is shopping to do, family
to contact and gatherings to manage. But,
most of all (at least, in my opinion), there
are meals to cook and, of course, meals
to eat!
I am, I suspect, like most of the readers
of the JN, particularly fond of latkes. And,
I want to say this: May the food critics
who want to outlaw such things as tasty
fried foods never set their sights on latkes.
This week, while reading the Dec. 19,
2013, issue of the IN, I read a very nice
story that reaffirmed my wishes: "`Y.'
Latkes: The Younger Generation Takes the
Latke Challenge" by Annabel Cohen. The
theme of the story is simple: Young mem-
bers from the Detroit Jewish community
were learning the craft — no, better yet
— the art of latke making. Featured in the
story are Raquel Cohen, Emily Elkhous,
Daniel Stein, Ariel Disner, Allison August
and Eli Newman, all learning how to
make delicious latkes under Cohen's tute-
lage. The article also includes a basic latke
recipe. I only wish I had been there to
taste the results of their labors.
As long as people are willing to learn
the art of latke-making, I think there is a
bright future for the world. May they be
fried forever! *
