DEAR BARB,
Can you
explain aging?
How does
aging affect
our bodies?

THE MOMENTUM OF THE
AGING POPULATION

INTRODUCTION:
Aging is often traced to destructive reactions
in the body caused by Free Radicals over time.
These highly reactive molecules initiate chain
reactions of Chemical Disruptions: injuring cell
membranes, enzymes, and DNA.
We are not sure why and how aging begins.
Damage to cells and organs slowly come about.
We do know that something contributes to
the aging process and body functions in time.
Aging is unique to each of us as our genes,
diseases, and lifestyle are all involved. Many
researchers have found ways to explain that
we are genetically programmed.

HOW DOES AGING AFFECT OUR
BODIES

1. BIOLOGICAL AND GENETICALLY
A. Free Radicals (unstable oxygen molecules),
cause cells to wear out
B. DNA (our building blocks) malfunction,
and this leads to diseases and they can’t
be repaired
C. Our genes go on and off overtime
D. Our immune systems lead us to diseases as
we become more vulnerable
E. Our cells wear out
F. Our hormones change by our biological
clock
G. The Brain, Cardio, and Nervous System age
H. Individual lifestyles and individual
rates affect aging

2. AGING PROCESS
A. Nerve conduction and velocity decline
B. Breathing capacity declines
C. Strength loss
D. Muscle mass reduction
E. Heart rate declines (in exercise) and net
heart rate at rest
F. Osteoporosis
G. Cancer risks
H. Disability

Rebel Nell Jewelry

Known for its
“irreverent tone
and unique edi-
torial features,” Detroit’s
’90s alternative weekly Orbit, and its
predecessors White Noise and Fun, are
detailed in this collection. So punk is
Orbit, it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia
page, yet Quentin Tarantino made his
Pulp Fiction cameo wearing a T-shirt
with its mascot, Orby, on it. With a
foreward by creator Jerry Vile, this vol-
ume shows that all three publications
were “distinctive in their content and
uniquely Detroit in their tone.” An inde-
pendent, non-fiction bookstore, Source
Booksellers is owned by a retired
Detroit Public Schools educator.
