arc Jonna, co-owner of Plum Market,
tasted more than 100 wines at the
Kosher Wine and Food Show in New
York last month.
“As the popularity of quality kosher wine continues
to increase, the quality and variety of wines available
to the kosher wine consumer are astounding,” he said.
Many of these wines come from Israel. “Israel is
like the Nappa Valley of kosher wines,” Jonna says.
“People who don’t need kosher wine choose these
wines because of their quality.”
Good kosher wine is also coming from California,
Italy, Spain and France, he adds. “Plum Market has the
largest selection of kosher wine in West Bloomfield
year-round,” he says. “I got to bring a few wines back
from the show, so come in for some ‘secret buys.’”
To assist with holiday shopping, Jonna put together
a Kosher Wine Guide to share with the JN. “While

$50+ KOSHER WINES

“Th ese are those special wines I would proudly serve
any Master Sommelier,” he says.

• 2013 CB Matar by Pelter, Galilee. “The cumulonimbus cloud is known
for both its towering power and graceful appearance. This blend of
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc from the
Upper Galilee mirrors those characteristics,” he says.

• 2013 Black Tulip Bordeaux Style Blend, Galilee. According to
International Wine Review, “The Black Tulip is Tulip’s top-of-the-line
bottle, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and
Petit Verdot sourced from the best barrels for each variety.”

• 2012 Domaine Du Castel Grand Vin, Jerusalem-Haute Judee. Castel’s
premium red wine: a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot
and a little Petit Verdot, made from their best grapes and aged 24
months in new French oak, according to Jonna.
