Try Our New Boneyard Beef Ribs! Orchard Lake Rd. South of 14 Mile t Farmington Hills 248-851-7000 Lonergan prisingly funny. Lonergan’s first Broadway success, This is Our Youth (1996), was about three young-adult Jewish friends (one female) who face a real crisis involving embezzled money, a possible mob hit on one and the need to quickly raise cash through selling drugs. Still, there’s humor in the play. Likewise, his film You Can Count on Me (2000), was a critical hit about a “half- Jewish” brother and sister who work to sort out their relationship after the attempted suicide of the brother’s girlfriend. NATALIE AND AMOS Natalie Portman, 35, made a surprise appearance at the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival on Nov. 16. Portman appeared on stage just as Israeli author Amos Oz, 77, was about to receive the Festival’s lifetime achievement award and introduce a show- ing of the film based on his autobiographi- cal novel, A Tale of Love and Darkness. Israel- born Portman, the writer, director and star of A Tale of Love, delighted the crowd with her brief remarks praising Oz. By the way, Portman announced in September that she is expecting her second child with chore- editor's picks Lynne Konstantin Arts & Life Editor Carteris Portman and Oz ographer husband Benjamin Millepeid, 39 (two years ago Millepeid said he was in the process of converting to Judaism). DOINGS AT ANGELS MEMORIAL Marlee Matlin, 51, will guest star on the Dec. 7 (10 p.m.) episode of CBS drama series Code Black. She’ll play a deaf patient who arrives at Angels Memorial Hospital with her translator after their car rolls over into a river. Matlin’s film credits include Children of a Lesser God, for which she won the best actress Oscar. While none of the regular cast members of Code are Jewish, Gabrielle Carteris, 55, played a recurring character, Nurse Amy Wolowitz, in the show’s first season (2015-16). Best known for playing Jewish character Andrea Zuckerman on Beverly Hills, 90210, she was named president of SAG-AFTRA (actors and broadcasters union) last March when the union’s president died mid-term. She’s turned out to be a busier and tougher union head than expected. Perhaps the press of her union duties has put her “nurs- ing career” on hold. * In 1924, the American Jewish World glow- ingly described a concert given by Roland Hayes. The groundbreaking African American lyric tenor and composer broke color barriers to become a world- renowned artist, filling both Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Symphony Hall three times a season. An interpreter of European art songs, he also was a pioneer in bringing the Negro spiritual to the classical repertoire. Check out The First of His Kind: The Roland W. Hayes Story, a new musical starring Travis Pitt and commissioned by Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. $30-$50. (313) 887-8500; musichall.org.
