usannah Heschel is an American scholar, pub-
lic intellectual, and professor of Jewish Stud-
ies at Dartmouth College. She comes from a long
line of Jewish thinkers, teachers, scholars and
rabbis. Her grandfather, a Hasidic rebbe, served
the poor in Warsaw; her father, Abraham Joshua
Heschel, marched with Martin Luther King Jr.
Professor Heschel has become a noted scholar in her own right, fo-
cusing on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th
centuries, the history of biblical scholarship, and the history of anti-Semi-
tism. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including four
honorary doctorates.
Professor Heschel has also edited, translated, and published numer-
