My Story When the newly-married Susie Pappas came to the Detroit area, she knew no one here. She joined community organizations as a way to meet people and acclimate to her new life, taking leadership roles and making a difference. But joining the Hebrew Free Loan Board moved her enough to re-join a few years after her first term ended. “This is something I’m excited to do, something I care very deeply about, because what this agency has achieved for Michigan Jews is so exciting,” Susie said. “At HFL, when a need arises, we ask ourselves, ‘If we can see it, why can’t we do it?’ That’s how we get such incredible funds as the William Davidson Jewish College Loan Program, the Marvin I. Danto Small Business Loan Program or the Pitt Fund for Special Needs. As an agency, we evolve to meet people where they are and help them progress through their lives.” What the agency does on a regular basis, Susie maintains, is create a safety net for the community. “There is a lot of compassion at HFL,” Susie said. “There are such passionate people on the Board and the staff, borrowers are welcomed and respected, and they respond with warmth and share their stories. From my perspective, HFL is not about worry and strife, it’s a joyful agency because we can be there for others, help fund bright futures and be the reason people smile. I would be here forever, if they’d let me.” Become an HFL Donor. Click. Call. Give Now. www.hfldetroit.org 248.723.8184 Health. A fresh start. A good education. The next great business idea.
