T
here is no question that Southwest Detroit is a gold mine for
local Latin American eats, but Troy has its own hidden gem. At
the corner of Maple Road and Livernois sits El Guanaco, a tiny
restaurant that’s easy to miss, but worth a pit stop.
While it started as a small
grocery store back in 2004, El
Guanaco eventually expanded into
a family-run restaurant, thanks to
owners Geobany Nunez and Irma
Hernandez.
El Guanaco is known for its
eclectic combination of Mexican
and Salvadorian “bites,” as their
menu advertises. There is limited
seating, but the wait is generally
reasonable, especially on week-
nights.
While the chefs can easily whip
up your typical Mexican style
offerings of tacos, nachos, quesa-
dillas and burritos, the authentic
Salvadorian fare is by far the star
of the show.
As soon as diners are seated, out
comes a basket of complimentary
warm tortilla chips and a side of
tomato salsa.
Guests won’t find alcoholic bev-
erages, but instead can opt for one
of their refreshing fruit shakes,
called licuados de frutas, in addi-
tion to aguas frescas, a delightful
TOP: Pupusas with curtido combination of fruits, seeds, water
BOTTOM: Tamale and plantains and sugar.
For wary newcomers, starting
with a few empanadas is a good
El Guanaco way to ease into the meal. These
710 Livernois Road, Troy dainty, corn triangles are filled
a choice of beef, chicken,
(248) 526-0622 with
pork, beans, cheese or potatoes.
They are melt-in-your-mouth
quality, and it’s difficult to stop at just one.
Other Salvadorian staples are pupusas, and after trying El Guanaco’s
version, there is no turning back. One bite of these pillowy tortillas leads
to an indescribable feeling of sheer bliss.
Pupusas are served warm and filled with endless combinations of
melted cheese, beans, potatoes, meats or Loroco flower, an edible plant
found in Mexico and Central America.
At El Guanaco, pupusas are served with a substantial portion of cur-
tido, a zesty cabbage slaw filled with carrots and onions.
The lunchtime pupusa special, which comes with two pupusas and a
side of rice and beans for $7.99, is a favorite among regulars.
To round out the meal with something on the sweeter side, their fried
plantains are bursting with flavor and pair perfectly with a dollop of
sour cream or pinto beans.
Open seven days a week, El Guanaco offers not only great service, but
some of the best Latin American eats in suburban Detroit.
