Bloomfield; senior Abraham Aiyash, Hamtramck, senior
Hauwa Abbas, East Lansing; and junior Batoul Sadek,
Dearborn Heights.

Upon hearing of the threat, I and anoth-
er member of the Jewish Student Union
went to stand outside the Islamic Center
of East Lansing in solidarity until the com-
munity members went inside for the final
prayer for the day. I was very moved by
this experience, and it gave me the hope I
so desperately needed.
It was a diverse group of people from
the community standing together to show
support for our Muslim neighbors and
friends.
One woman, a perfect stranger, saw
that I looked cold and wrapped her blan-
ket around my shoulders. Cars honked and
waved in support and some dropped off
food and water. There were members of
the LGBTQ community, people from the
church next door and a 1-year-old boy on
his mother’s back. Some people held signs
that read “We support our Muslim neigh-

bors” and “Love trumps hate.” Members
of the Islamic center came out to intro-
duce themselves and thank us for being
there. It was truly a beautiful gathering.
I will continue to fight for safety and
inclusiveness of my Muslim friends and
every other marginalized group that has
been the target of hate. I am proud to be
a Jewish ally of these groups, and I know
they would stand with the Jewish com-
munity if we ever needed it. Worldwide
and nationwide problems are daunting,
but “being the change” starts in our own
communities — and it starts when we
stand together. @

Ashley Schnaar of Bloomfield Township is a
junior at Michigan State University. She currently
serves as the vice president of the Jewish Student
Union.

Sharing Cultures
At Albion College

Hillel at Albion College held an
interfaith dinner-and-learn event
on the topic of “Life, Death and
the Afterlife in Judaism” taught by
MSU Hillel/Hillel Campus Alliance
of Michigan Senior Jewish Educator
Rabbi Rebecca Walker.
The dinner took place in the
Albion College Umbrella House.
Umbrella is the governing body

of all the multicultural student
organizations.
The purpose of this governing
body is to create a “safe place”
where each under-represented
student population is supported;
to provide an environment in
which students can voice concerns,
struggles and accomplishments; and
to educate the Albion community
about the diversity of cultures and
customs. @
