slow down and stay put — but
not Advance Plumbing and
Heating Supply Co. Instead, the fourth-
generation family business is changing
with the times and making the move
into a new, bigger and better sales office
and warehouse in Midtown.
Its longtime headquarters at 2894
Grand River Ave. near MotorCity Casino
Hotel predated construction of the John
C. Lodge Freeway. The company —
started by the late Harry Chernick, con-
tinued by his son-in-law, the late Ronald
Moss, and now run by Jeff Moss and
sons Josh and Justin — gave up a portion
of its land and its building to make way
for M-10.
Because of its commitment to stay-
ing in the city, the company survived
through hard times over the years as
other companies moved north. Advance
Plumbing, though, never looked to aban-
don its deep community roots.
“Today the future looks more amazing
than ever,” said company vice president
Josh Moss, the fourth-generation at the
family-owned business along with broth-
er Justin, who is the operations manager.
The Moss family are longtime members
of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.
“Our new, larger facility will support
our current plumbing and heating sup-
ply business, and we plan to open the
city’s first-ever decorative plumbing
showroom in Midtown Detroit,” Josh
added.
The Midtown location at 150 Parsons
St. will continue to house plenty of
pipes, valves and fittings, but Advance
Plumbing’s focus is no longer just on
repair parts as it was for much of the
company’s history. It is now distributing

plumbing supplies for new construction
work as well, part of an effort to help
rebuild the city of Detroit as its latest
renaissance unfolds.
The company received a $100,000
grant in April from the Detroit Economic
Growth Corporation’s Motor City Match.
That’s when company president Jeff
Moss made the commitment to spend
nearly $2 million to build and restore the
Parsons Street building. Plans include
recreating the historic façade of the
building that faces Cass Avenue, which
originally housed a car dealership in
1918.
Though many cities have plumb-
ing showrooms, today there’s nothing
in Detroit proper like what Advance
Plumbing has planned. Jeffrey Moss says
there’s now enough demand to warrant
a sophisticated showroom, particularly
given the many properties being restored
around the city.
Adds Josh Moss, “Our business
specializes in having the products and
expertise necessary to maintain the
older homes and buildings in the city
of Detroit. In addition, we are adding
thousands of new products essential to
rebuild the city.”
The new showroom will open this
spring. In addition, Advance Plumbing
operates a suburban location in Walled
Lake at 1977 E. West Maple Road.
The company prides itself on serving
as a single-source distributor for the
public, plumbers, builders and interior
designers.
